The Las Vegas Pride name their team captain. With the first event of the season less than a week away the staff of the Las Vegas Pride announced that Laurie Byrd (5'6''-G, college: E.Michigan) has been named the captain of the 2009 Las Vegas Pride.

Laurie Byrd is the former Director of Player Personnel with the Houston Comets. Prior to joining the Comets, Byrd served as an assistant coach for three seasons with the Detroit Shock. Byrd also spent five seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Detroit Mercy.
Byrd has an extensive playing background. She played in the American Basketball League and the Womens Basketball Association. She played on the San Jose Lasers and the Atlanta Glory with the ABL and played on the Kentucky Marauders and the Chicago Spirits with the WBL. Byrd also spent time playing overseas. She played 7 seasons in numerous basketball clubs in Sweden, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.
Byrd has received many awards and honors. She was inducted into the Eastern Michigan Hall of Fame in 1992 and the AAU Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2003, Byrd was the Think Detroit Honorary Double Goal Coach of the Year.
The Las Vegas Pride open the 2009 season this Thursday in the Las Vegas Pro-Am. This years tournament will feature teams from across the country including: New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Inglewood and Akron.
